It all started in the bustling corridors of Arizona State University (ASU), where Nate and Rhet crossed paths while they were each navigating their individual academic pursuits. From shared classes to reflective conversations, their journey from classmates to collaborators encapsulates the essence of innovation born from everyday interactions.
The duo fondly recalled frequent visits to local bars where they would unwind and brainstorm. These gatherings often blended casual banter with serious discussions about their projects, sometimes leading to forgotten ideas the next day, as they playfully admitted.

Reflecting on whether there was a definitive ‘eureka’ moment, Rhet explained, “No, there wasn't. So that’s the thing, it was kind of a very slow evolution of things.” This slow and steady approach eventually led them to focus more intently on specific aspects of their initial configurator project, adapting and evolving it based on real-time learning and industry needs.

Overcoming challenges and technological growth

From its inception, Openings Studio was characterized by a series of challenges that were met with both creativity and determination. The team grappled with technical issues such as managing server heat in a makeshift server room—humorously recounted by Nate and Rhet as more of a laundry room than a technological hub. "We had so many fun stories related to that closet... It wasn't technically a closet. It was like the laundry room of this old house,” they recanted.

As the tool evolved, so did its capabilities, transitioning from a basic web configurator to a sophisticated platform with 3D imaging and real-time rendering. This evolution was not just a testament to technological advancement but also to the persistent pursuit of solutions, underscoring their commitment to turning obstacles into opportunities.
Strategic outreach and refinement
 
Key to the development of Openings Studio was the strategic outreach. Initial efforts were hands-on, with Nate and his colleagues personally visiting firms to demonstrate the capabilities of the tool. This direct engagement was crucial in refining the tool's features and tailoring it to meet specific customer needs.

Reflecting on these efforts, Nate acknowledged the modest scope of their initial ambitions, which centered on gaining traction within the US market and ensuring the stability of server operations. 

Celebrating creative milestones and favorite features

In discussing their favorite aspects of working on Openings Studio, both Nate and Rhet expressed a profound appreciation for the creative challenges they encountered. Rhet recalled working on the spec builder, a pioneering tool at the time of its development, "It was fun to work on from that standpoint, and it's really cool to see 15 years later... people use it on a daily basis still."

Nate's enthusiasm was especially evident when he talked about the graphics engine. "My favorite part has always been working on the graphics engine," he shared. "It felt a lot like designing a video game."

Rhet's reflections on the evolution toward mobile app development for Openings Studio reveal a significant shift in perspective over time. Initially skeptical about the necessity of a mobile app, Rhet admitted that originally there wasn’t an intention to develop one, adding ”that for the most part you can accomplish [what you need] through a web browser." Nate concurred that “15 years ago, we weren't thinking about inspections and mobile apps.”

However, as technology evolved and smartphones became ubiquitous, Rhet's views shifted. He recognized the enhanced capabilities that a dedicated app could offer over a web browser, especially in terms of utilizing smartphone-specific features like cameras and microphones. "As things have evolved and everyone kind of depends on a smartphone... then it really made more sense," he explained. 

This acknowledgment underscores the need for flexibility to remain relevant and effective in the constantly evolving tech environment, illustrating how the move toward mobile app development by the Openings Studio team was a strategic response to broader technological trends.
